Incoming 7th Grade Information
The transition from Elementary to Jr High can be a big one! We understand how your fears, concerns, and excitement all roll together and it can feel a bit overwhelming (for students and parents)! Hopefully this information helps you in knowing a bit more of what to expect.
7th Grade Physical
It is a State of Nebraska mandate that all incoming 7th Grade Students MUST have receive a physical and visual exam. Although most physical forms are acceptable, the official physical form can be accessed HERE. A physical form must be on file with the DTHS office before the start of the school year. Physicals can be submitted (either from you or your doctor's office) to DTHS by mail (PO Box 300, Doniphan, NE 68832) , fax (402-845-6688) or via email to Vickie White, secondary secretary ([email protected])
School Supply List
There is no specific supply list for Jr High other than general supplies (i.e. pens, pencils, paper, a way to keep your materials organized - notebooks, a colored folder for each of your classes, large "trapper" or binder, etc).
A Padlock for your locker and PE locker will be provided by the school and you MUST use the school provided locks. The school locks have a master key to unlock the lock and this is helpful if you need assistance.
Students are asked to bring PE appropriate clothing for PE classes, which includes a pair of athletic type shoes that are clean from rocks. Personal hygiene supplies are also encouraged.
Some teachers may have specific items that they request, but none of these items are essential for the first day and they will give you more detailed information at 7th grade orientation next fall. Some examples are: Mrs. Saathoff request that you bring a 100-page Composition Notebook for her English class and Mr. Bivens requests that you have a calculator (in the price range of $10-$12) for math class.
7th Grade Orientation
You will receive a letter over the summer inviting all 7th Graders and parents/guardians to 7th Grade Orientation which is held in August just prior to the start of school. During orientation you will be introduced to teachers, coaches and administrators who will cover information you need to know regarding Junior High. Your class schedule will be handed out that night along with laptop information and information regarding your Academic and PE lockers. You will get to meet the Jr. High teachers, find your classrooms and your locker.
Dress Code
We do get a lot of questions about dress code and appropriate dress although it is not a lot different than what you have had in the past. The main questions about or issues we deal with are:
Girls - Tops must cover undergarments at ALL times. This means straps should be at least one inch thick.
Boys must wear sleeves except during PE or other athletic practices.
Shorts and/or skirts must be an appropriate length, half-way to your knee when standing would be ideal.
Pants or jeans with holes (showing skin) above the knees are not permitted.
Bell Schedule
One of the biggest transitions of Jr High is to a secondary school "bell schedule" for classes. Each of your classes will be equal in length every day, with a 3 minute "passing period" between classes to move to your next class. At first, 3 minutes seems stressful but soon you will find that those 3 minutes are almost too much time to get between classes! (I promise, you soon will be able to not only get to your classes on time but squeeze a bathroom stop in on the way!) We have organized most of your classes to keep your travel between rooms as manageable as possible and your locker is located in the same area as a majority of your classes as well.
If you are curious about the times of each class period, you can take a look at the DT Bell Schedule HERE.
Lockers
Each student is issued an academic locker in the upstairs hallway to keep all of their personal and school belongings. Each student is also issued a padlock to be used on their locker to secure their belongings. You must use the school issued padlock as it has a master key that can open each lock if need be. The replacement cost is each student's responsibility if the padlock is lost or damaged.
Backpacks
Backpacks are to be left in lockers through the day and not taken into classrooms. Students must carry their school laptops in the school-issued laptop bag but any other backpack or large bags are not permitted in classrooms.
Cell Phones
DT Jr/Sr High School's policy on student cell phone use is based on the idea of keeping learning first. Thus, cell phones are not to be accessed during instructional time and not in classrooms. We ask that if you have a cell phone at school, you should leave it in your locker during class time. You can check your phone in between classes during the passing periods and at lunch. Essentially, if it is class time you should not a cell phone. If you do have your cell phone in class, you will loose access to your phone for the remainder of the day and you will pick up your phone in the office at the end of the day. If this happens more than once, a parent will have to come get your phone from the office. If this issue continues, students may be required to turn their cell phone in at the office during school hours. If parents need to reach their student during class time, please call the office at 402-845-6531 anytime.
